A Taste of History: Spaces of Belonging
Saturday, March 25 | 4-7 p.m.
Visual & Performing Arts Center, De Anza College
This special event was co-hosted by the California History Center and the Euphrat Museum of Art, featuring author Anne Marie Todd and singer, songwriter and pianist Jackie Gage. Proceeds from the Taste of History support after-school art classes for at-risk youth, and De Anza student multimedia projects that preserve and share our local history. “Spaces of Belonging” explored how the land and spaces we live in shape us and how we shape them.

DID DAD WIN?

We did this historical program on gambling because gambling was a big part of the history of San Jose Japantown and Chinatown. One of the older guys told us this story about when he was a little kid. He remembers sitting in the back seat of the car with his brother while while his mother was driving around Japantown, cursing because she’s looking for her husband, who was at a poker game, and she’s trying to remember where the poker game was, and she’s trying to go find him so she can drag him out right.

SNEAK AROUND UNDERGROUND

Kurt Fukuda He has these stories he’s heard, but he doesn’t have any documentation of it, because it was just in passing years ago. They used to be tunnels connecting buildings in downtown San Jose. He heard stories that Chinese used them to get around, which also happened in another cities with early Chinese immigrants who are workers, like Bakersfield or Pendleton, Oregon. They would get attacked if they’re walking around at the streets. At certain times or blocks people would throw rocks at them, but some of the big institutions where they work would have these tunnels. So he thinks there were some in San Jose. So there are some cities they where they have documented tunnels. But, because he has a story he told when he was in one of the San Jose buildings. I can’t remember what building. Somebody was saying, oh, yeah, that used to go to a tunnel. It’s all boarded up now. We can’t get to it.

AUDREY EDNA BUTCHER

A civil liberties education initiative at the California History Center. Audrey Butcher was an area grammar school teacher during World War II. She witnessed the disappearance of numerous students from her classroom as they and their families were forced, with thousands of other Japanese American citizens, into isolated internment camps in the nation’s interior.

HIDDEN HISTORIES

Hidden Histories is a live experience that connects you to the underlying beauty and historic riches of this remarkable neighborhood. Through Augmented Reality (AR) technology, your mobile device becomes a gateway to visions inspired by the milestones that shaped Japantown. You will see and interact with the art, which is overlaid on current-day Japantown. Hidden Histories debuted in June 2021 — nine AR art installations produced by artists selected by our advisory panel of scholars, historians, and activists. Visit this website for regular updates on the project developments, the artists involved in the project, and the evolving technology of AR art.
